About AFROPUNK BLACK SPRING
As the world and Black communities across the globe begin to recover from a year of massive upheaval, we are forging forward to create spaces of Black liberation and celebration. Our first festival and call to action this year is AFROPUNK BLACK SPRING, inspired by new beginnings and the changing season, our digital festival is taking place in a location that will melt away any winter blues. The events of the past year have brought conversations about nuanced and varied Black experiences across the diaspora. Looking toward the sun, we hope to let this festival be a re-imagining of Black unity and take the opportunity to celebrate our many Afro-Latin, Afro-Caribbean, and Afro-Descendant kinfolk.

  • The AFROPUNK platform is not only a celebration of what is possible, it is also a call to action.
  • BLACK SPRING embodies a mindset, looking at the world and creativity through an afro-futuristic lens where success can look like anything we can dream.
  • BLACK SPRING introduces an open cultural convergence of Afro-Descendant music, culture and a deep dive into the intersections Afro-Latin, Afro-Caribbean and other layered identities of the Diaspora.
  • BLACK SPRING will be bringing festivities, community engagement, thought provoking conversations, and affirm the diversity of Black voices, freedom, and power.

About DJ Kumi
By the age of 14, Kumi had practiced and studied his craft with intense focus, quietly developing the skills that made sequencing and mixing music very natural to him. Today, Kumi has DJ'd with Maseo from De La Soul, Madlib, Mndsgn, J-Rocc, Tall Black Guy, Sango, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Kid Capri, Karriem Riggins, Quest Love, DJ Yella (from NWA), Kamaal Williams, and more. He has a Miami-based radio show "Brainville" on WDNA 88.9 FM Miami—an avant garde jazz show. He has another show called "Radio Karibe," which is an open format vintage tropical music show.
